Garage door cable and off-track repair: Crooked door? Stop using it
A door hanging lower on one side, a loose cable or rollers out of the track all mean the door is not carrying its weight evenly. Unplug the opener, keep everyone clear and send a photo from a safe distance.

What knocks a door off track
The most common causes are a frayed or snapped lift cable, worn rollers, a bent track after a bump from a car, or a broken spring that lets one side drop.
- A car or mower bumped the track or the bottom section
- A lift cable frayed at the bottom bracket and let go
- Old rollers cracked or seized
- The door closed on something and twisted
- Strong wind pushed on the door while it was moving

The fix
How a door gets back on track
Rehanging a door means taking the load off safely, which is why it is a technician job.
- 01
Secure the door
Clamp the door so it cannot move while the tension is handled.
- 02
Cables and drums
Replace a damaged cable, and check that both drums wind evenly.
- 03
Rollers and track
Straighten or replace a bent track section, and swap cracked rollers.
- 04
Balance and test
Check the door balance and the opener reversal before you use it again.
Safety first. Never loosen, adjust or remove springs, lift cables, bottom brackets or anything bolted to them. They hold the weight of the door under high tension. DASMA TDS-151 reserves that work for trained door technicians.
Short answers
Cable and track questions, answered first
Short answers.
Can I push the rollers back into the track?
Not while the cables or springs are under tension. A door that came out of the track can drop or twist. Unplug the opener and send for a repair.
Is a frayed cable urgent?
Yes, treat it as urgent. A frayed cable can snap and let one side of the door fall. Stop using the door until it is replaced.
Will I need a new door?
Usually not. Most off-track doors are rehung with new cables or rollers. Sections bent badly when the door came out may need replacing. Try the repair or replace helper.
